How Booking Works
Overview
This two-day plan focuses on accessible mountain routes near Pine Ridge Preserve. Refer to the Overview to confirm distances and expected effort before you depart.
Trails
The itinerary follows two main routes chosen for scenic views and reliable footing. These Trails combine ridge-line exposure with a lakeside approach to balance elevation gain and recovery.
Day 1: Ridge Loop
Start at the Pine Crest trailhead, ascend Summit Pass, and complete the Ridge Loop for roughly 10 km and 650 m elevation gain. The segment labeled Day 1: Ridge Loop includes a short scramble near the viewpoint; use trekking poles where needed.
Day 2: Lake Ascent
Begin from Willow Camp and approach Mirror Lake, then follow the Lake Ascent route to the east ridge. The Day 2: Lake Ascent is gentler on elevation but requires careful route-finding around the marsh section.
| Segment | Distance | Elevation Gain | Estimated Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ridge Loop | 10 km | 650 m | 5–6 hours |
| Lake Ascent | 8 km | 420 m | 4–5 hours |
Gear Checklist
Before you leave, run through the Gear Checklist to ensure safety and comfort. Carry a headlamp, first-aid kit, and a charged phone or satellite beacon.
Navigation
Water Treatment
Filter or chemically treat lake and stream water. The Water Treatment step prevents giardia and other contaminants; plan capacity so you can refill after Mirror Lake.
Clothing
Layering is essential: moisture-wicking base, insulating midlayer, and a waterproof shell. Adjust clothing choices for wind exposure on ridgelines described in the Clothing notes.
Safety
Prioritize weather awareness and wildlife precautions. The Safety section below addresses sudden storms and bear-aware practices relevant to these routes.
Weather
Mountain weather can change rapidly; check forecasts and carry extra insulation. If thunderstorms develop, descend from exposed ridgelines immediately—this Weather advice applies especially to Summit Pass on Day 1.
Wildlife
Store food in bear canisters and make noise on blind corners. Avoid close approaches to elk and keep dogs leashed; the Wildlife protocols reduce negative encounters along both routes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I pack for an overnight hike?
Pack essentials: shelter (lightweight tent or bivy), sleeping system rated to expected temperatures, 2–3 liters of water capacity, water treatment method, headlamp with spare batteries, and emergency signaling device. Refer back to the Gear Checklist for a full list.
How do I handle sudden storms on the trail?
If you encounter a sudden storm, move off exposed ridgelines and seek lower, sheltered terrain. Avoid standing near isolated trees during lightning. The Weather guidance gives timing cues for when to alter plans.
